Chase Brexton Collection

Chase Brexton is a non-profit Health Center that provides care to more than 50,000 patients annually across Maryland. Founded in 1978 as a volunteer-run clinic responding to the needs of gay men during the early HIV/AIDS epidemic, it has grown into a cornerstone provider of LGBTQ+ healthcare while expanding its mission to offer medical care to all community members, regardless of their ability to pay.

In 2024, Chase Brexton acquired a series of paintings focusing on places in Baltimore and citizens that benefit from the programs they offer.

Baltimore gangs came together by wearing bendannas to protect their community in the face of police brutality witnessed over the death of Freddie Grey while in custody on April 19, 2015. The Bloods Gang wore red and the Crips Gang wore blue.

American Brewery on North Gay Street

Built in 1887 by John Frederick Wiessner, a German immigrant, it was the largest brewery in the state of Maryland. I was drawn to its striking central Italianate tower and mansard roof. Currently renovated and home to the Humanim non profit organization it looms over a vast ghetto in North Baltimore with astonishing decrepitude and poverty.

The church has an impressive bell tower with a hexagonal top rising over the neighborhood. Even streaming through moving vehicles, a strong vertical band predominates the visual design in the painting, accentuating an emphasis on a faith based community.

A severely pitched roofed structure is built into a steep sloping hill which appears like a temple in the wilderness. Additionally, Gothic architectural features are brilliantly lit which adds to a feeling of mystery and transcendence upon this grave site.
